Calculating Impact & the WA Materials Marketplace
Repair, Share, & Reuse Impact in Washington
We’re developing a Washington Reuse Impact Calculator — a standardized tool designed to streamline the collection and analysis of data around the social, economic, and environmental benefits of share, repair, and reuse activities.
This calculator is being designed for all repair, share, and reuse practitioners (including governmental, for-profit, and nonprofit) such as:
> Community-based repair groups
> Libraries of things / tool libraries
> City / county government programs conducting repair / reuse activities
> Small repair shops & refurbishers
> Rental businesses
> Resale shops (e.g. – thrift and consignment stores)
> Creative reuse spaces
> Reclaimed building materials providers
> Upcycling businesses
> …and more! not sure if you fit into the categories above? reach out! info@repairreuse.org
- Standardize data collection: Establish consistent methods to track and analyze impact metrics.
- Inform decision-making: Provide clear insights that highlight the environmental and social benefits of reuse initiatives.
- Strengthen our community: Help promote best practices across the repair, reuse, and sharing sectors.
Washington Reuses: A Materials Marketplace
We’re working with Zero Waste WA, the Good Business Network of WA, and the Department of Ecology’s Recycling Market Development Center to host a statewide “materials marketplace” platform which will facilitate “next best use” reallocation of a variety of useful materials such as:
> Byproducts of manufacturing processes
> Scrap materials
> Overstock / Excess
> Items being surplussed due to changing needs or upgrades
> Non-functioning items that can be used for different purposes or potentially repaired
Similar to the impact calculator, the marketplace is intended to serve a variety of entities:
> City / county government salvage programs and/or surplus operations
> Tribal nations and community members
> Reclaimed building materials providers
> Small batch manufacturers, upcycling businesses, and independent makers
> Repair shops & refurbishers
> Resale shops (e.g. – thrift and consignment stores)
> Creative reuse spaces
> Schools and universities
> Tool Libraries
